How To Do Odds & Ends: Great Tips Worth Knowing

by How To Mommy on 05.09.11

Ever get those emails full of great ideas and you delete it, knowing you’ll “never forget” what you read?  Right.  The tips were great, but in reality, we’ll never remember them again.

I was so excited when a friend sent me one of those deleted emails today!  I wanted to highlight some of the best tips so you can bookmark this page and never forget them again.  🙂

Great Tips Worth Knowing {and Remembering}

  • Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store.  If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
  • Expanding Frosting – When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes and it will double in size.  Now you can frost more cupcakes/cakes with the same amount of frosting.  Plus, you end up eating less sugar and fat per serving!
  • Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil.  It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
  • Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating.  Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
  • Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef.  It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
  • Reheated Pizza – Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm.  This keeps the crust crispy {no soggy microwave pizza}.
  • Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if you want a stronger garlic taste.
  • Reheating refrigerated bread – To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in the microwave with a cup of water.  The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
  • Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of broken glass you can’t see easily.
  • Weeds Be Gone – After placing your plant in to the soil, layer wet newspapers around the plants and overlap as you go.  Cover them with mulch and you can forget about weeds!  While they can get through some gardening plastic they cannot get through the wet newspaper!
  • Keep running out of shaving cream?  Use conditioner to shave your legs.  It’s cheaper and leaves your legs super smooth!
  • Mosquito Repellent – Place a dryer sheet in your pocket.  It will keep the mosquitoes away!
  • Before you pour sticky substances in your measuring cups, fill it with hot water.  Dump out the water, but don’t dry the cup.  Then add your sticky ingredients, like peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes out.
  • Static-be-gone – Just pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress!  The static is gone.
  • Pesticide free ant killer – Place small piles of cornmeal wherever you see ants.  The ants can’t digest it so it kills them, but it won’t harm pets or small children.
  • Wash your lint filter in your dryer with hot soapy water and an old tooth brush at least every six months.  This will increase the life of your dryer and help prevent it from overheating.
