How To Have a Happy House

by How To Mommy on 08.04.11

Between taking care of two little girls, working part time for my state’s local breastfeeding coalition, spending time with my husband, cooking, working out, seeing family and friends and running this blog, I always joke that the thing that suffers is my house.

Ok, it’s not a joke.

If you came over, I’m sure you’d think the house looked clean.  And then you’d open a closet, look behind a piece of furniture or notice the cobweb at the top of my staircase that has mocked me every morning for 5 years.

Then I stumbled across the “Happy House Challenge.”

How To Have a Happy House

Basically, the challenge entails adopting two “daily chores” each week and by the end of the five weeks we’ll be living in cleaner, happier houses.

It sounds easy enough, so I decided to jump on board.  Here are the two chores this week:

  1. Make the Bed: Simply making the bed in the morning will get you started on the right foot and in a clean and organized mode.
  2. Empty the Sink: Having a clean sink will instantly make the kitchen look cleaner. It’s a great habit to get into.

Guess what two things I always do, no matter what?  That’s right!  Empty the sink and make the bed.  I will literally make the bed the moment before hopping in to sleep if I’ve forgotten because I can’t go to sleep in an unmade bed.  And do NOT get me started on left over dishes from the night before.  Sick.

{I need to specify, these chores were chosen from the Happy House Challenge, not by me.  My husband thought I cheated and picked things I’m good at.}

So far, I’m loving this Happy House Challenge.  I just hope next week’s challenge isn’t to organize your closets or fold and put away your laundry the day you wash it… 😉

What chores do you love?  What chores do you dread?

I like vacuuming, but I despise dusting!

Dusting is like ironing to me. I just don’t think it’s necessary. 🙂

Ooh, I’m going to do this, too. I HATE to mop the floors. haha. But, I like vacuuming. I vacuum every room every night. haha. It gets dusty in the desert. 🙂 I’m a new follower.

I vacuum almost every day on account of my yellow lab, otherwise I probably never would!

I think this is a great thing to do. I keep my main floor clean but the upstairs bedrooms seem to always need something done. A few things I hate is cleaning up dog hair (it’s always everywhere) and anything that evolves getting my hands wet. I recently got myself some cute gloves to help with that issue. As far as things I like, well really nothing. I loved when I had a house cleaner 😉

I am definitely joining the challenge! My sink is always full of dishes, I make my bed few minutes before I go to sleep…and so on 🙂 Will try this!

Maybe some of your tips for a happy house will trickle over to your neighbor’s house…. 🙂 You are right – those cobwebs do have a habit of mocking a mama!!

I always make the bed every morning. I absolutely hate ironing clothes. I sometimes go to work wearing un ironed clothes 🙂

Hello. I am your newest follower from the Monday Monkey Blog Hop! I hope to see you over at Jennifer’s Deals

I love this post. It is so true about the clean sink. I hate having a sink full of dishes. My kitchen always looks better when I get the dishes done!
