I don’t go anywhere without my camera. My must-have?  Definitely a dSLR camera!  With a baby on the move, I need something that I can manually adjust the settings to get that perfect shot, and something that gives me a fast shutter speed so I can stop the action, without having to use my flash.

I have a Sony a290 camera, but honestly the brand and type totally depends on you!  Check out Canon, Nikon, Sony, or whatever brand you like.  Hold the cameras, practice messing with the settings, and see what feels comfortable and natural in your hands.  But here’s the real tip–don’t go for the kit the store is selling.  Most of the time, the lens that comes with the camera is Crappy (yes, with a capital C.  That’s how much I don’t like mine!).  Get just the camera body, and then get a good prime lens separately.  I recommend either the 50mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/1.8 lens if you’re mostly going to be taking portraits of your kiddos.  You’ll end up spending around the same, or only a little more, than if you buy the camera with kit lens!

Thanks for the great tips! Check out more about Staci and her awesome photography of E {and NYC} at Gatorette and Me.
