How To Splash: Sea Anemone Pool Toy

by How To Mommy on 07.12.11

This past week I’ve been in charge of arts and crafts at my church’s Vacation Bible School.

With kids ages four to eight, it’s really important to have items that all ages will enjoy and that can be made by everyone.  Plus, it’s really important to keep cost in mind, since we have to provide material for around 100 children.

One craft met all our criteria and I just can’t get enough it!

This sea anemone ball is the perfect toy for the pool, beach, or even bathtub!

It’s so easy to make and the items needed are incredibly inexpensive as well.

How To Make Sea Anemone Pool Toys

  1. For each child, obtain 3 brightly colored sponges (regular 3 inch x 5 inch sponges work the best) and one 6 inch (or longer) zip tie
  2. Cut each sponge into 5 even strips, length-wise
  3. Line up 15 pieces in three layers of five pieces
  4. Place the zip tie in middle of the sponge and pull the tie as tight as you can
  5. Cut the extra tie and fluff the pieces and you’re done!

Wasn’t that simple?  For under a few dollars you can have an adorable toy that will be the hit of the beach!

Thanks for your comment on my ‘water bomb’ post. Your ‘sea anemones’ look great! I have noticed that when the sponges dry after they’re wet, they become really hard! I’m currently on the lookout for softer ‘foam-like’ sponges to make my indoor ‘sponge bombs’! Don’t want any kids getting hurt…especially at church!
