How To Get Healthy By Dropping 5 Pounds

by How To Mommy on 03.21.11

As busy moms with hectic schedules, sometimes it’s hard to eat right or adhere to a strict workout regiment.

After my second daughter was born, I made it my goal to get healthy and develop eating and workout habits that I’d be happy for my children learn from me.

I was so excited when I came upon Good Housekeeping’s article entitled 100 Ways to Get Healthy.

They had seven categories {Drop 5 Pounds, Get Fit Fast, Stress Less, Blast Fat Faster, Love Your Heart, Burn More Calories, and Make Health Easy}, so I thought that each week I’d share the most “mom-friendly” tips from each category with you!

How To Drop 5 Pounds

  1. Add an hour of sleep per night and you could drop 14 pounds per year. {Yes, our darling little ones may do their best to interfere with this one, but it’s worth a shot for 14 pounds!}
  2. Spice up your meals. Capsaicin, found in jalapenos, cayenne and other spicy peppers, increases the body’s release of stress hormones – like adrenaline – and speed up metabolism.
  3. Choose healthier fruit. Supermarket fruit has supersized over the years so yesterday’s medium is today’s small.
  4. When you need a sweet snack, choose one that’s healthy.  Packed with antioxidants, potassium, and fiber, prunes are surprisingly delicious.  Individually wrapped, plums are only 25 calories each!
  5. Choose eggs over bagels. Researchers found that people on a low-cal diet who ate two eggs for breakfast lost 65% more weight than those who had a bagel with the same number of calories.  They shed the extra pounds because they felt fuller after breakfast and ate fewer calories during the day.
  6. Choose water. Researchers found that overweight women who traded sweetened drinks with water lost an average of five more pounds than those who didn’t.
  7. Consume three servings of low-fat dairy daily. A study showed that dieters on a six-month program who followed a high-dairy meal plan lost nearly twice as much weight as their nondairy-eating peers.
  8. De-stressing can be a great way to slim down. A study found that women who performed daily relaxation techniques, such as mediation, yoga, or even writing in a diary for 20 minutes, lost an average of 10 pounds after 18 months. {Nap time, anyone?}
  9. Eat slowly. A study showed that women who ate their lunch in thirty minutes as opposed to nine consumed almost 70 fewer calories.
  10. Be smart when eating out. A recent study showed that restaurant meals have at least 60% more calories than food made at home.  Steaks can be 12 ounces or larger (a recommended portion is 3 ounces) and pasta can be as much as two cups (recommended serving is half a cup).

What great tips do you have for losing 5 pounds?  Have you found that any of the above mentioned tricks worked for you?
