How To Get Healthy by Stressing Less

As a stay at home mom, listening to whining and crying for the better part of the day can definitely wear on your nerves.  Bed time seems a million hours away and you wonder how you’ll make it through.  Luckily, Good Housekeeping’s 100 Ways to Get Healthy article had some very “mom-friendly” ways to stress less.  So put the kiddos down for a nap, take a deep breath and read on…

How To Stress Less

  1. Try walking meditation. For 20 paces, walk as slowly as you can, feeling your feet as they move, hearing your breath flow through your lungs, and noticing the smells and sounds around you. {Who knows, maybe this will help calm your infant during a 3 AM fit!}
  2. Just say no. Minimize your packed schedule by learning to say no to things you don’t have time to do.
  3. Make fresh ginger tea. Ginger is a powerful anti-stressor that also soothes upset stomachs and can alleviate headaches.  To make the tea: Peel 1 inch of fresh ginger root and cut into thin rounds.  Cover with 2-3 cups of water and boil for 10-20 minutes.  Sweeten with honey for a delicious nighttime soother.
  4. Schedule down time.  This week, find 10 minutes to do nothing and add it to your calendar.  No reading, no TV, no talking on the phone.
  5. Stop dreading and just do it. If there’s something you’ve been avoiding because it’s unpleasant, tedious, or just boring, do it this week.  By taking care of it, you can stop wasting energy dreading it and start focusing on more important things.
  6. Treat your eyes. Give your eyes a beautifying treatment that’s also relaxing.  Soak two chamomile tea bags in lightly warmed milk until soft.  Place them over your closed eyes and rest for 10 minutes.  The milk replenishes moisture and the scent of chamomile soothes frayed nerves.  After 10 minutes, rinse with warm water and follow with your favorite eye cream.
  7. Let out some steam. Sweating is a vital process that flushes toxins, improves circulation and is emotionally cathartic.  This week, visit a steam room or sauna, or sit in a warm bath at home with a towel draped over your head.
  8. De-clutter. Since getting organized can seem overwhelming, choose one small space that needs attention and de-clutter it.  Toss or recycle anything you don’t need and give the area a quick wipe-down. {I did this to my pantry last week.  It feels amazing!}
  9. Pucker up. Kissing relieves stress by creating a sense of connectedness, which releases endorphins, the chemicals that counteract stress and depression.  So smooch spontaneously!
  10. Treat yourself to a favorite thing. Remember how great you felt when your mom made your favorite birthday dinner?  This week, pretend it’s your birthday and treat yourself to one of your favorite things, whether it be homemade mac and cheese, fresh flowers, or even a nap.  When you make a point to treat yourself well, others are more likely to do the same.

Amen! (coming from Hop a little Tuesday). I have 4 and sometimes its everything in you not to just lose your mind. These things are so important! sometimes I go get a starbucks (even if its $5!), because its that little thing that a mama just needs for herself!

This is so helpful for me right now. Some days it’s the endless “Why?” Other days we have trouble being in the same room together. I always try to make time for myself to rejuvenate. My favorite is planning spa time. Doing a facial and pedicure followed by a salt scrub in the shower. Yummy relaxation! Realizing I’m due for one of those soon. Thanks!
