How To Shop Organic on a Budget

by How To Mommy on 04.18.11

After watching Food Inc and learning what I now know about food, I definitely want to feed my girls (and myself and hubby) the best food I can.

The only problem with organic food is that it’s SO expensive.  As a stay-at-home mom with a limited income, I feel like it’s my duty to find ways to save on our grocery bill.

That’s why I was so excited to read the featured article in this month’s Kiwi magazine, “Shop Organic on a Budget.”

Below is a list of six great tips on how you can save money and still feed your family food you can be proud of.

How To Shop Organic on a Budget

  • Make it count. Focus your organic purchases on the items your kids eat most.
  • Go Generic.  Save big bucks by choosing store-brand organic items at stores like Trader Joe’s, ShopRite, and Whole Foods.  If an item has the USDA Organic seal, it’s meeting the same organic standards as the name brand and your family probably won’t be able to tell the difference!
  • Shop beyond the grocery store.  Big box stores and online retailers now sell organic goods at low prices.  Remember that the next time you’re surfing Amazon and see if their prices beat your local stores.
  • Use Your Freezer.  Watch for specials on organic or Certified Humane meats and stock up when they’re on sale.
  • Build Your Pantry Over Time.  You can keep your budget in check by stocking your organic pantry slowly and with an eye on comparison shopping.
  • Check For Coupons. Many brands, including Stonyfield Farm, Arrowhead Mills, and Seeds of Change feature printable coupons on their sites.  Also check databases like organicfoodcoupons.com and organicdeals.com that scour the web for deals.  You can also search eBay for organic coupons.

I hope these tips are able to save you some money and allow you to buy more quality food for your families!
